Caltech’s campus in Pasadena, CA area spans 124 acres, and the school receives no public funding.

Caltech is an internationally renowned science and engineering research institution that brings together pioneering thinkers and cutting-edge technology to tackle some of society’s most intractable problems.

The Institute oversees NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which sends probes to measure environmental changes on Earth and other planets in the solar system. In addition to founding and co-managing LIGO, Caltech owns and administers other large-scale research facilities, including the Seismological Laboratory and a global network of astronomical observatories that includes the Palomar and W. M. Keck Observatories.

Despite its modest size, Caltech is known for its emphasis on achievement and innovation. Every day, the Institute’s exceptional academics, students, postdoctoral scholars, and staff advance our knowledge of the cosmos, challenge long-held assumptions, create entirely new fields of study, and develop ground-breaking technologies.

They are making revolutionary advances in everything from quantum physics and engineering to bioinformatics and the origins of life, from the study of human nature and economics to the development of renewable energy sources and environmental sustainability. In total, there are over fifty separate research facilities located on Caltech’s campus. Roughly 90% of first-year students at Caltech work on a research project throughout their stay here.

The demanding coursework, frequent opportunities for student-faculty interaction, and manageable class sizes are the hallmarks of a Caltech education. Undergraduate and graduate students at Caltech pursue their education in an intellectually stimulating community that places a premium on collaborative problem solving, critical thinking, peer support, and an in-depth familiarity with fundamental ideas and principles applicable across disciplines.

Caltech prepares its students to become leaders in academia, industry, government, and the scientific and technological fields. It is intended that graduates would be able to use their knowledge and communicate it effectively to a wide variety of audiences throughout their careers in science and engineering, as well as discover, evaluate, and solve complex problems within and across these fields.

There are six academic departments at Caltech that house the 28 different majors available to the school’s almost 1,000 undergraduates. The interdisciplinary nature of modern research, business, and society necessitates the ability to make connections across disciplines, and Caltech’s program not only builds students’ expertise in a core area of study and research but also requires a considerable depth and exposure to basic science, humanities, math, and social science overall.

The Career Development Center offers a wide variety of resources for students, from those seeking an internship to those interested in advancing their education. Over the course of the summer, hundreds of undergraduates learn from and gain experience with researchers at the cutting edge of their areas.
