The beginning of Historic Highlands may be traced back to the turn of the 20th century, but the area truly blossomed during the first World War and the prosperous 1920s. At the time of Historic Highlands’ incorporation into the City of Pasadena, CA in 1925, it had undergone a transformation from a secluded country outpost to a lively and diverse neighborhood. Prior to that, there had been orange groves in the early 20th century suburb, and by the time of that transformation, it had become a bustling and diverse community.
Ezra Dane, an orchardist who settled here in 1883, and David MacPherson, a former Santa Fe Railroad design engineer of the famed Mt. Lowe railroad owned the estates and land holdings that make up what is now known as the Historic Highlands. These two prominent Pasadena pioneers were responsible for the construction of the Mt. Lowe railroad.
You’ll discover that the Historic Highlands is a lively neighborhood these days, with lots of community events that help neighbors get to know one another better and urge them to keep their relationships healthy. Block Parties, Wine Socials, and the Fourth of July Parade and BBQ are some of the annual activities that take place. Historic Highlands Home Tours are done on a somewhat regular basis. In order to keep the community up to date on recent happenings and concerns that have an effect on the neighborhood as a whole, the HHNA hosts General Meetings twice a year, in the spring and the fall.
In the early 1990s, the Historic Highlands Neighborhood Association (HHNA) was established in order to facilitate and encourage neighbors to collectively work together to build a stronger community and to provide a unified voice to City Hall when it was necessary to do so. This was accomplished through the collective efforts of the neighborhood.
The board of the HHNA is made up entirely of volunteers, and it has a variety of subcommittees that focus on events and topics that are relevant to the neighborhood.
